12th Annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Commemoration

Wednesday, April 11, 2018 - 6:00 pm

A brief interfaith community remembrance ceremony will be followed by a concert commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which began on April 19, 1943.

The concert will feature music by composers (Felix Mendelssohn and Gustav Mahler) whose work was banned by the Nazi regime, music by victims (Ilse Weber and Gideon Klein) of the Holocaust, and music by Ernst von Dohnányi, who opposed the campaign in Hungary against Jewish composers, music instructors and musicians, and who contributed to the rescue of dozens of his Jewish colleagues.

The artistic director of the concert is Julia Bullard, School of Music. Performers include Trio 826 (Susanna Klein, violin; Julia Bullard, viola; Hannah Holman, cello) and School of Music faculty members Ross Winter (violin), Katherine Osborne (mezzosoprano), James Jenkins (piano) and Vahktang Kodanashvili (piano).

These events are sponsored by the UNI Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education, the Hearst Center for the Arts, and the UNI School of Music.  The Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony is also sponsored by Sons of Jacob Synagogue (Waterloo), Catholic Parishes of Waterloo, and the Peace and Justice Center of the Cedar Valley.

These events are free and open to the public.  A reception will take place held following the concert.
