9th Annual African American Children and Families Conference: Transforming Communities for the Betterment of African American Children and Families.

Among the keynote speakers: Corey Roberto Lanair Holmes, with the Atlanta Police Department, and Theodora Pinnock, M.D., Meharry Medical College. Spend the day learning, networking and meeting new colleagues while strengthening your understanding of how action, attitudinal change, sharing and caring can better the lives of children and families.  Guest speakers, a youth track, and special community forum on behavioral health are among the day's offerings.

Have you always wanted to see the inside of a computer, try to build your own or just looking to try something new? Learn to take apart a computer and put it back together in a hands-on workshop. No experience is needed. All majors are welcome.

There will be gallery displays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. presented by middle and high school teachers, as well as students presenting community-based research projects about air and water quality issues in their communities. There will be a keynote speaker, UNI and Iowa panelists and activities about air and water quality issues and careers in Iowa from 12:15 to 3:30 p.m.

Faculty artist and conductor Amy Kotsonis will coordinate this interactive event, featuring women’s chorus ensembles from Iowa high schools, as well as UNI’s own Women’s Chorus. The event will culminate in an evening concert at 6:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public, but the festival does require registration. Under the direction of School of Music professor Tina Su, the UNI Horn Choir will offer a spring recital featuring community players as well as UNI students as part of this day-long event. The Office of Student Life, in partnership with the Student Wellness Services, provides an interactive alcohol education and bystander training to all members of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL). This training, called Red Watch Band, is adapted from the program provided by Stony Brook University.

This annual conference is designed for women leaders and administrators in higher education in Iowa.  Several of the conference concurrent sessions will be presented by UNI faculty and/or staff.  Student scholarships are available.
