"Telling A People’s Story" is the first major museum exhibition devoted to the art found within the pages of African-American children’s picture books. The exhibition emphasizes the strength of the illustrations as visual narrative representations of the African-American experience.
This exhibit is in conjunction with the African American Children and Families Conference, UNI Museum, Dr. Sarah Montgomery, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, and education student Danielle Templeton are happy to present a traveling exhibit Telling A People's Story. Telling A People's Story is organized by the Miami University Art Museum through a grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation. This project is a collaboration with Rod Library, UNI Museum, HNI Corporation Instructional Resources and Technology Services (IRTS), Cedar Falls Public Library, UNI College of Education, and is also sponsored in part by the Cedar Falls Tourism Bureau.

G.C. Waldrep will read from his new collection, feast gently (Tupelo, 2018). He earned his B.A. from Harvard University, a Ph.D. in history from Duke University and an M.F.A. in poetry from the University of Iowa. His collections of poetry include Goldbeater’s Skin (2003), which won the Colorado Prize for Poetry; Disclamor (2007); Archicembalo (2009), winner of the Dorset Prize; Your Father on the Train of Ghosts (2011). Waldrep is also editor of West Branch and editor at large for the Kenyon Review. His honors and awards include prizes from the Poetry Society of America and the Academy of American Poets, fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the North Carolina Arts Council, and residencies from Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony and the Campbell Corner Foundation. He currently teaches at Bucknell University and directs the Bucknell Seminar for Younger Poets.

An Evening of Hip Hop and MoreAn Evening of Hip Hop and More

"From China to Thailand to Iowa, An Evening of Hip Hop and More" is a night of hip hop music, art, dance and performance, an outgrowth of community collaboration that led to students from UNI and the Waterloo Community School District performing at cultural festivals in Thailand in January and in China last fall. The UNI community and general public are welcome to attend.
The full line-up of events includes:
- Video of the China trip, including performances by the Waterloo Hip Hop Literacy students at the Hangzhou Citizens Leisure Festival;
- Video of the Thailand trip, part of the Thailand International Folklore Festival, which included the UNI hip hop dance group, The Movement.
- Live performances by both student groups.
- Additional hip hop performances by Des Moines-based Hip Hope, and King Tez and Marcus Jackson, local performers.
- Project presentations by Waterloo students in the Waterloo Writing Project and Youth Art Team
