“Séance: Photographs by Shannon Taggart”

“Séance: Photographs by Shannon Taggart”

Tuesday, January 17, 2023 - 10:00 am to Friday, February 24, 2023 - 5:00 pm

Organized by the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, in collaboration with the Pensacola Museum of Art. For the past twenty years American artist Shannon Taggart (born 1975 and based in St. Paul, MN) has documented contemporary Spiritualist practices and communities in the United States, England, and Europe. The resulting body of work examines the relationship of Spiritualism to human celebrity, its connections to art, science, and technology, and its intrinsic bond with the medium of photography. There will be a lecture by Taggart on Wednesday, February 8 at 6:00 p.m. in KAB 111. A book signing and opening reception will follow. Sponsored in part by The North America Review. Selections from Taggart's book Séance are featured in the Fall 2022 issue of the North American Review, which has been housed at the University of Northern Iowa since 1969. Relationships as the Beating Heart of Higher Education: An Evening with Leo Lambert

Relationships as the Beating Heart of Higher Education: An Evening with Leo Lambert

Tuesday, January 24, 2023 - 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm

On Tuesday, January 24, 2023,Leo Lambertwill bring together faculty and staff from Wartburg College and the University of Northern Iowa to explore the power of putting authentic relationships at the core of higher learning. Dr. Lambert, who is president emeritus of Elon College and co-author (with Peter Felten) ofRelationship-Rich Education: How Human Connections Drive Success in College(2021), will come to us via Zoom through a personal mentorship connection with President Rebecca Neiduski of Wartburg College.

Launching from a conversation with Zak Montgomery (Harry and Polly Slife Professorship in Humanities, Wartburg) and Jonathan Chenoweth (Director, UNI CETL), Dr. Lambert’s evening session will invite questions from all participants, including those involved in Relationship-Rich reading groups from both campuses. No prior reading is necessary, but if you are interested a good overview of the book with text and video resources is openly available from Elon College.

Start the Spring 2023 semester with some stories and conversation at the intersection of the inspirational and the practical.

“Drawing on nearly 400 interviews with students, faculty, and staff at 29 higher education institutions across the country,Relationship-Rich Educationprovides readers with practical advice on how they can develop and sustain powerful relationship-based learning in their own contexts. Ultimately, the book is an invitation—and a challenge—for faculty, administrators, and student life staff to move relationships from the periphery to the center of undergraduate education.”  –from the publisher
