“Séance: Photographs by Shannon Taggart”

Tuesday, January 17, 2023 - 10:00 am to Friday, February 24, 2023 - 5:00 pm

Organized by the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, in collaboration with the Pensacola Museum of Art. The resulting body of work examines the relationship of Spiritualism to human celebrity, its connections to art, science, and technology, and its intrinsic bond with the medium of photography. There will be a lecture by Taggart on Wednesday, February 8 at 6:00 p.m. in KAB 111. A book signing and opening reception will follow. Sponsored in part by The North America Review. Selections from Taggart's book Séance are featured in the Fall 2022 issue of the North American Review, which has been housed at the University of Northern Iowa since 1969. Physics Colloquium: Modeling bipartite networks in a negatively curved space

Physics Colloquium: Modeling bipartite networks in a negatively curved space

Wednesday, February 8, 2023 - 4:00 pm

Dr. Aleksander Poleksic

UNI Computer Science Department

Abstract

Accurate embedding of a complex network in a metric space (a space equipped with a distance function) is of critical importance in nearly all downstream machine learning tasks, such as classification, clustering, regression, and probabilistic inference. State-of-the-art machine learning methods typically use the Euclidean (flat) space as the native space of complex networks. This approach has been questioned by recent theoretical studies that claim that complex systems reside in a space of negative Gaussian curvature. Building upon those ideas, we propose a methodology for accurate embedding of a bipartite network into the hyperbolic space. We demonstrate that our technique leads to improved prediction of associations between network objects, while lowering the embedding dimension by more than an order of magnitude compared to the existing approaches.
