State Physics Competition for High School Physics StudentsState Physics Competition for High School Physics Students

The UNI Physics Department hosts the State of Iowa Physics Competition from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. which is a series of five physics events (catapult, mousetrap car, bridge building, soda straw arm and measurement) for high school (Grades 9-12) students. The competition stresses creativity and ingenuity as well as an understanding of physics related principles and is intended to stimulate interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The competition emphasizes the scientific and engineering practices found in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and participation in the competition integrated with appropriate instruction can address the Iowa Core.

QPR is a nationally recognized suicide prevention gatekeeper training. This training is for the UNI campus community and helps all participants become knowledgeable in helping prevent a potential suicide.
In this 90-minute training you will learn:
- How to recognize the warning signs of suicide
- How to ask if someone is feeling or thinking about suicide
- How to encourage them to get help
- How to refer that person to the right support and care

UNI Export Controls Officer Emily Pittenger will outline what faculty and staff need to know about federal export control regulations, which govern the “exporting” (sharing) of information, equipment, or software with individuals from other countries. Those who travel internationally, are engaged in sensitive technical research, use special equipment, and/or have international students or collaborators are especially encouraged to attend. You will learn which “exports” are controlled and how to guard against violating these laws and regulations, as well as what the consequences may be if you do so.
