Have an Attitude of Gratitude!Have an Attitude of Gratitude!
Sunday, November 12, 2023 - 8:00 am to Saturday, November 18, 2023 - 4:30 pm
As the stress of finals approaches, it may seem more difficult to express and practice gratitude. Luckily, gratitude is a character strength that all of us have within us AND we can intentionally work to develop it! In fact, when we regularly practice gratitude, numerous studies suggest, we increase our happiness and train our brains to see the good, even in the midst of the bad.
Here are some tips to help you flex your gratitude strength!
Student Wellness Services offers a variety of opportunities for you to exercise your gratitude strength. Our Wellness Coaches are ready to help you explore what you’re grateful for and help you find ways to increase your gratitude practices! Sign up for a Wellness Coaching session today! We will work with you to develop strategies that work for YOU so you are able to feel the many benefits of gratitude, including lowered stress, better sleep, and stronger relationships.

Physics Colloquium: Gravity Theory Applications in Plasma Astrophysics & Condensed Matter PhysicsPhysics Colloquium: Gravity Theory Applications in Plasma Astrophysics & Condensed Matter Physics
Wednesday, November 15, 2023 - 4:00 pm
Dr. Shanshan Rodriguez, an Assistant Professor of Physics at Grinnell College will be presenting findings on Gravity Theory Applications in Plasma Astrophysics & Condensed Matter Physics. Abstract for presentation per Dr. Rodriguez: In this talk, I will discuss the recent evolutions of the interdisciplinary connection between gravity theory and two other traditionally separated subfields of physics: magnetic reconnection in astrophysics and condensed matter physics. Recent investigations show that magnetic reconnection could also cause radiative magnetic flares near the equatorial accreting regions of a rotating black hole, where the black hole’s rotational energy could be extracted to accelerate nearby objects in the black hole’s ergosphere. By computing the energy at infinity per enthalpy for magnetic reconnection, we study various combinations of parameters that maximize energy extraction, the associated extraction rate and efficiency. Furthermore, I will discuss our most recent work on gravity duality to solve shape optimization problems in condensed matter physics. There are numerous examples of holographic dualities in physics, with the AdS/CFT correspondence of string theory being probably the most famous. In this talk, I will attempt to shatter this paradigm by introducing and outlining the duality between the extraordinary magnetoresistance (EMR), observed in semiconductor-metal hybrids, and non-symmetric gravity coupled to a diffusive U(1) gauge field. We will begin with examples at the college physics level and move up from there through advanced topics in corresponding gravity theory. I will also conclude our recent results of constructing the four-dimensional covariant field theory and computing the resulting field equations of motion.

Guardians of Trust: Unmasking Digital Deceit - IEWGuardians of Trust: Unmasking Digital Deceit - IEW
Wednesday, November 15, 2023 - 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm
It is hard to talk about being the victim of unethical and illegal crimes. In this session we will create a safe space to unpack patterns of behaviors and technology abuse designed to benefit one entity and hurt another without adding value. We will explore tools and resources for spotting red flags and the actions we can take to firewall off the destruction tricksters can cause to our own life, our loved ones as well as the community where we are working to build up and add new value.
