Native American Perspectives on History
The History Department is proud to host our 51st Carl L. Becker Memorial Lecture: Native American Perspectives on History: Looking at the Past Through a Meskwaki Lens
The Tribe has been called every name in the book (including Renards, the Fox, Outagamies, and Tama Indians) but has always identified itself as Meskwaki, the Red Earth People. It's impossible for the Meskwaki to tell their history without also telling world, U.S., and Iowa history. But today not many people know there's a small, federally-recognized tribe that still has a home in Iowa, and many more would be surprised to discover how inextricably linked the Tribe and State truly are. Re-experience the Iowa story from an Indigenous perspective and discover how much more historical significance there is to a so-called "fly over" land.
Johnathan & Suzanne Buffalo, of the Meskwaki Nation and Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa will be speaking.
