Jerusalem in the Time of JesusJerusalem in the Time of Jesus
Monday, April 8, 2024 - 6:30 pm
By Jodi Magness, Archaeologist
Sponsored by the Dr. Jonathan J. Lu and Sayoko Lu Biblical Geography Endowment Fund
Archaeology enables us to reconstruct with a great degree of accuracy the city of Jerusalem as it appeared in the first century CE, where Jesus spent his final days on earth. This slide-illustrated lecture provides an overview of key sites associated with Jesus in Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount; the Lithostratos pavement and Arch of Ecce Homo; and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. We also consider the evidence for the historicity of the traditions associating Jesus with some of these sites.

TC DayTC Day
Tuesday, April 23, 2024 - 12:00 am to 11:59 pm
Panthers love a good celebration! Since 2018, the UNI campus has observed TC Day, a chance to enjoy the end of a (sometimes) harsh Iowa winter and the excitement that always comes with a new season. It began when President Mark Nook issued a proclamation that a particularly cold winter had ended and the campus community was ready to enjoy a taste of the warmer weather. He invited everyone to join him for some tropical treats, and a tradition was born.
Originally called Tropical Celebration Day, TC Day has evolved into a day not only to relish the warming temperatures and the approaching culmination of another successful academic year, but also a time to recognize all of the wonderful things about the University of Northern Iowa and the people who call it home.
As the Panther community enjoys the seventh year of this tradition, TC Day has expanded from those treats handed out by President Nook into a day of celebration across the campus. TC Day 2024 will include fun throughout the day. Watch UNI's social media channels for more information.

Physics Colloquium: Electronic Structure of Rare-earth Diantimonide LaSb2Physics Colloquium: Electronic Structure of Rare-earth Diantimonide LaSb2
Wednesday, April 24, 2024 - 4:00 pm
Evan O’Leary, Graduate Student at Iowa State University presents Electronic Structure of Rare-earth Diantimonide LaSb2. Experimental investigation of electronic structure is essential to our theoretical understanding of how macroscopic properties arise due to quantum interactions. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is one method used to study the electronic structure of materials. Hear a brief overview of ARPES and discuss the electronic structure of the rare-earth diantimonide LaSb2. Rare-earth diantimonides exhibit many interesting properties such as super-conductivity, charge density wave ordering, and different magnetic phases. The compound LaSb2 is the only member of this family found to be non-magnetic. However, it does undergo a charge density wave ordering at TCDW = 355 K and enters a superconducting state at Tc = 1.2 K. Also presented will be ARPES data above and below TCDW , and a demonstration that there are no apparent changes in the electronic structure due to the CDW ordering.
