Resistance + Rescue: Photographs by Judy Ellis GlickmanResistance + Rescue: Photographs by Judy Ellis Glickman
Friday, October 5, 2018 - 10:00 am to Sunday, November 25, 2018 - 4:00 pm
Through images and symbols, the horrors of the Holocaust are familiar to us all. Yet, too few of us are aware of the remarkable story of the flight of the Jews out of Denmark to safety in Sweden in the fall of 1943, seventy-five years ago. The exhibition of photographs by Judy Ellis Glickman reopens a time in our history when the bravery of a few overcame the brutality of so many.
Without words, Glickman tells the story of the rescue through pictorial observations. Using subtle manipulations of the photographic process, she captures the many emotions of the rescue, as well as a stark reminder of what Hitler’s Final Solution did achieve. Glickman also presents the concentration camps as cruel, empty places. In these images, we are reminded that without the courage of the Danish government and its people, the fate of Denmark’s Jews would have been similar to that of so many of their European neighbors.
This exhibit and related events (including an opening reception on from 5:30 to 7:00 on October 5 and a three-part film series) are a collaboration of the UNI Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education and the Hearst Center for the Arts.

"The gauntlet has been thrown:" Newspapers, op-eds, and American responses to antisemitism"The gauntlet has been thrown:" Newspapers, op-eds, and American responses to antisemitism
Tuesday, November 6, 2018 - 7:00 pm
In 1940, there were nearly 1900 daily newspapers in the United States read and shared by millions of Americans. These periodicals give us a glimpse into the intense struggles in the American heartland over arguments promoting racism, discrimination, antisemitism, and isolationism during the 1930s and 1940s. What role did antisemitism play in the general American cultural landscape? How did ordinary Americans in the Midwest and the rest of the country react to antisemitic rhetoric by political and religious leaders?
This talk addresses the landscape of the United States from the end of World War I to 1941, identifying the historical and social context in which Americans lived. It will also examine the role media played in what Americans knew about the world around them. It concentrates on three influential American leaders, Henry Ford, Father Charles Coughlin, and Charles Lindbergh, who were all involved with the America First Committee and who all spread antisemitic vitriol to millions of supporters. The talk concludes with generalizations from this period and lessons for the post-war era.
Eric Schmalz is the community manager for the History Unfolded project at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, DC. This program is made possible by the Campus Outreach Lecture Program of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, supported by the Leonard and Sofie Davis Fund.

Diversity Colloquium "What Can You Do With That?: Navigating Career Pathways in "Useless" Majors Through Service-Learning Partnerships"Diversity Colloquium "What Can You Do With That?: Navigating Career Pathways in "Useless" Majors Through Service-Learning Partnerships"
Thursday, November 29, 2018 - 7:00 pm
Presented by: Cara Burnidge and Yasemin Sari, Assistant Professors of Philosophy & World Religions, philosophy students and EMBARC
Philosophy and the Study of Religion are often perceived as "useless" liberal arts majors, leaving students unprepared for careers after college. In response to these stereotypes, the Department of Philosophy & World Religions addresses these concerns through two critical service-learning seminars partnered with Ethnic Minorities of Burma Advocacy and Resource Center in Fall 2018. Yasemin Sari and Cara Burnidge, and their students, discuss their experiences, and demonstrate how these majors offer students opportunities to develop leadership and career-ready skills through course work, intentional service, and reflection.
