Kyle Fogt, UNI export controls officer, will outline what faculty and staff need to know about federal export control regulations, which govern the “exporting” (sharing) of information, equipment or software with individuals from other countries. Those who travel internationally, are engaged in sensitive technical research, use special equipment and/or have international students or collaborators are especially encouraged to attend. You will learn which “exports” are controlled and how to guard against violating these laws and regulations, as well as what the consequences may be if you do so. Registration requested.

We Are the Asteroid: Art and the Ecological CrisisWe Are the Asteroid: Art and the Ecological Crisis
Wednesday, November 13, 2019 - 7:00 pm
The Aldo Leopold Distinguished Lecture Series welcomes Justin Brice Guariglia to deliver the final Leopold Lecture for the fall semester. He will present, “We Are the Asteroid: Art and the Ecological Crisis." |
Guariglia is a contemporary artist known for his large scale photographic, sculptural and installation based works that explore the relationship between humans and the natural world. Guariglia has frequently collaborated with scientists, philosophers, and journalists in order to forge a deeper understanding of human impact on the planet. Notably, his work includes a series of missions he’s flown with NASA scientists, beginning in 2015, to document Greenland’s rapidly changing ice. Images gathered from those missions are used as source material in his work. |
As the world searches for ways to continue to work together to address the climate crisis of the Anthropocene, it is evident that deep care lies at the heart of real action and is critical when enacting social change. Art has a powerful ability to communicate this kind of care and urgency through the fog of divisive and dismissive dialogue, so when the question is asked, “Can art help change the world?”, Guarigla argues, the answer is a resounding, “YES”. |
