Conducting Online Surveys: Methods, Platforms, and Ethical ConsiderationsConducting Online Surveys: Methods, Platforms, and Ethical Considerations
Monday, February 10, 2020 - 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm
Anita Gordon, PhD, Director of Research Ethics, Office of Research & Sponsored Programs Kristin Moser, PhD, Director of Institutional Research & Effectiveness Megan Vogt-Kostner, M.A., Senior Research Analyst, Office of Institutional Research & Effectiveness
Designing an online survey can seem like a breeze at first, but if not done well, can leave you with bad data, small sample sizes, and breaches of privacy - at a minimum, wasting your time as well as those who participated. When designed well, online surveys can be an inexpensive, useful, and efficient way to obtain data for research and program assessment. In this session, presenters will offer guidance on how to effectively conduct online surveys, including how to invite participation to maximize response rates, and how to use the survey platforms available, with an emphasis on UNI's subscription program, Qualtrics. In addition, ethical considerations will be discussed in regard to design, recruitment, and data management. We will not be covering how to develop research questions or design content to answer them. The focus will be on the technical aspects of recruitment, data collection, and data management processes using electronic survey methods.

Claire Kovacs: The SisterSerpents’ Rage + Bodily Autonomy Claire Kovacs: The SisterSerpents’ Rage + Bodily Autonomy
Tuesday, February 11, 2020 - 6:00 pm
The SisterSerpents slithered into being on July 4, 1989 as an anonymous, radical, feminist, art collective that was active in Chicago (and beyond) between 1989-1998. Made up a constantly shifting roster of women, they used a mixture of humor, creativity, and anger to shed light on and provoke discussion around a wide range issues related to misogyny. They curated exhibitions and performances, organized panels and discussions, wrote letters to the press, printed their own zine, and used guerrilla-style tactics to place their work around Chicago. Utilizing fierce, uncompromising, and intentionally aggressive language and practice, they asserted that “Our art is merely and marvelously our weapon.” This lecture situates their work in dialogue with their influences (The November Group and the Berlin Dadaists) and considers their resonance with contemporaneous artists (Guerrilla Girls, Barbara Kruger).

Red Watch Band Training - Fraternity and Sorority LifeRed Watch Band Training - Fraternity and Sorority Life
Sunday, February 23, 2020 - 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm
The Office of Student Life, in partnership with the Student Wellness Services, provides an interactive alcohol education and bystander training to all members of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL). This training, called Red Watch Band, is adapted from the program provided by Stony Brook University and seeks to:
-
Promote a student culture of kindness, responsibility, compassion and respect.
-
Provide students with knowledge, awareness, and skills to prevent toxic drinking deaths.
-
Build confidence in students to intervene on behalf of another through bystander training.
The Red Watch Band training symbolizes that the FSL community bands together to watch out for one another when every second counts. It is an expectation of all FSL members to participate once during their time at UNI. This includes new members of each chapter and active members who have not previously participated.
