Sunday, February 16, 2020 - 12:00 am to Sunday, March 8, 2020 - 12:00 am
Millions of ordinary people witnessed the crimes of the Holocaust. "Some Were Neighbors: Collaboration and Complicity in the Holocaust," produced by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., explores how "neighbors"--workers, teenagers, policemen, religious leaders, business associates, teachers and friends--made individual choices that amounted to collaboration, complicity and, less frequently, resistance with regard to Nazi Germany’s persecution and murder of Jews.

Guest Artist Master Class: Alex Smith, percussionGuest Artist Master Class: Alex Smith, percussion
Tuesday, March 10, 2020 - 8:00 pm
Visiting artist Alex Smith will present a gyil master class. Introducing the instrument and his planned presentation, Smith noted, "The gyil, a Ghanaian marimba, is caught at the intersection of sustainability, global markets, and culture. Gyil materials like rosewood are valuable musically and beyond, resulting in their endangerment and over usage by Ghanaian, tourist, and colonial communities. Working with Tijan Dorwana, I investigated Ghanaian rosewood’s conflicting narratives of value, and the role the gyil community might play in conservation efforts. Through depiction of these narratives with film, live gyil performance, and live gyil carving, this clinic/performance encourages a more compassionate and proactive discussion of rosewood sustainability in the percussion community; one that considers the impact of global consumption on indigenous communities and natural habitats in addition to instrument markets, and that organizes our larger percussion community into activism for us all.” This event is free and open to the public.

Virtual Final Thursday Reading SeriesVirtual Final Thursday Reading Series
Thursday, March 26, 2020 - 12:00 am
For 19 years, the Final Thursday Reading Series has happened on the last Thursday of each month in Cedar Falls without fail. Through illnesses, snowstorms and last minute changes, we’ve never missed a month. And though the current COVID-19 outbreak makes a physical event impossible, FTRS will be going online. On Thursday, March 26, the Final Thursday Press website http://www.finalthursdaypress.com/ will post a video by the scheduled featured reader, Andrew Farkas. There will also be an “open mic” section of sorts. If you would like to share no more than five (5) minutes of your own creative work, please video yourself reading and upload it to a publicly accessible site like YouTube. Share the link with Jim O'Loughlin jim.oloughlin@uni.edu by Wednesday, March 25 to ensure that your contribution can become part of the event. For tips on how to record yourself see this Webcam tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMex-9FyljU. To view an interview with Andrew Farkas (conducted before the current situation) visit the Final Thursday Press website www.finalthursdaypress.com.
