Freedom Riders

Freedom Riders

Thursday, February 3, 2022 - 10:00 am to Friday, February 4, 2022 - 12:30 pm

FREEDOM RIDERS explore the valiant and courageous personalities behind one of the most critical chapters in the history of the Civil Rights movement. The play demonstrates the importance of working together to affect change and specifically how non-violent protest was used to combat the cruelties of segregation.

Set in 1961, fifteen years after the United States Supreme Court had outlawed segregation, bus lines and cities throughout the south still enforced a rigid system of separating Black and White citizens. The freedom riders, both Black and White Americans, decided to travel together on buses that crossed state lines purposefully disregarding the hateful segregation practices that were still commonplace in so many parts of the United States. The unforgettable heroes and the facts behind the events portrayed in FREEDOM RIDERS are essential to a full understanding of the civil rights era and American history.

Wednesday, February 9, 2022 - 4:00 pm

Dr. Shelly Lesher, Professor and Chair of Physics at University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, will present What's Science Got to do With It? The Intersection of Nuclear Science & Society.

Abstract

Born in war, nuclear science was first revealed to the world in horror. The Cold War, power plant disasters, and current political tensions continue to play into people’s fears of everything nuclear. Overcoming this perspective often feels like an almost insurmountable task. This talk will focus on examining the impact of nuclear weapons, energy, and policy in society. This public scholarship endeavor includes everything from the benefits of nuclear science in medicine and culture to the impact it has had on artists & musicians, human rights, and the economy among more well known events such as the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Disaster.

Faculty Artist Recital: Randall Harlow, organ

Faculty Artist Recital: Randall Harlow, organ

Thursday, February 10, 2022 - 6:00 pm

Faculty artist Randall Harlow will present an organ recital titled "Meditations on the Anthropocene". The Earth has entered a new era, the Anthropocene. For the first time in 4.5 billion years, the actions of a single species have irrevocably transformed the planet's soil, water, air and climate, not locally, but globally, not over millions of years, but decades. This era demands a reckoning for humanity. Featuring works for organ with electronics, this concert situates acoustic and electronic sound, human and non-human agency as metaphor for the fraught dichotomy of humanity-verses-nature at the heart of the social and political dynamics that led us to this situation. This event is free and open to the public.
