Out of the Darkness Walk

Out of the Darkness Walk

Saturday, April 1, 2023 - 10:00 am

Out of the Darkness is an on-campus student organization which raises awareness and funds for suicide prevention through the American Foundation for Suicide Awareness. The purpose of this signature event is to engage young adults in AFSP's mission and programs, raise funds for youth suicide prevention and programs, create a brand identity for AFSP fundraising, maximize fundraising success and laying the ground work for AFSP's educational programming and chapters in the future. At the end of the fundraising year OOTD hold a campus walk where efforts will be celebrated and participants will walk in solidarity for those lost to suicide and/or struggling with mental health. Campus walks will dramatically increase the number of young people involved in AFSP and the amount of funds available for suicide prevention research and education; both are needed to save lives. Why Walk? To change the culture. To save lives. To revent suicide. We all have a reason to walk, and each reason connects us.

Who is a Sincere Believer?: On Religious Freedom and its Limits--a Conversation with Charles McCrary

Who is a Sincere Believer?: On Religious Freedom and its Limits--a Conversation with Charles McCrary

Monday, April 3, 2023 - 5:00 pm

In Indiana, liberal Jews are arguing that a law banning abortion violates their religious freedom, including their sincere belief in bodily autonomy. In Arizona, a group of Native Americans protest the construction of a copper mine, since it will destroy land they sincerely believe to be sacred. Throughout the country, white evangelicals argue their sincere beliefs entitle them to disobey antidiscrimination laws. Under the law, who gets to be considered a "sincere believer," and what do sincere believers get to do? This talk will explore the history and contemporary politics behind these vexing questions.

Charles McCrary is a postdoctoral research scholar at the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict at Arizona State University. He is the author of Sincerely Held: American Secularism and Its Believers (University of Chicago Press, 2022).

Tending Iowa's Land An Evening of Discussion About Iowa's Lost Biodiversity

Tending Iowa's Land An Evening of Discussion About Iowa's Lost Biodiversity

Friday, April 21, 2023 - 6:30 pm

In partnership with the Iowa Academy of Science, the UNI Aldo Leopold Distinguished Lecture Series presents the biodiversity authors in Tending Iowa’s Land.  Among the four environmental themes addressed in Tending Iowa’s Land, the devastation of biodiversity is perhaps the most visible and important to the citizens of Iowa.   The authors will offer short readings and discussion that reviews the complexities of biodiversity and its role in ecosystems, the history of Iowa’s amazing biodiversity seen in the prairies and wildlife that made Iowa one of the most productive and diverse places on earth, and what we can do to return to a time when Iowa’s native biodiversity and its people could both call Iowa home. Free and Open to the Public.

UNI Interpreters Theatre Presents: Improv at the Interp: Theatre without a Net!

Friday, April 21, 2023 - 7:30 pm

Directed by Doug Shaw

Doug Shaw (“The Math Professor who Loves You”) is back in the interpreters theater with an all-new amazing troupe of performers ready to take your breath away with unscripted interactive theater. This is not “Whose line” improv, this is not “College Improv”, this is something you haven’t seen before. And since every show is different, this is something you won’t see again. We used an exclamation point in the title, and by gum we are going to earn it!

The show is free, but seating is limited. Reservations can be made through Eventbrite.

You can also visit the Interpreters Theatre on Facebook and Instagram.
