Physics Colloquium: Electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of CoVMnSb: ab initio study. Physics Colloquium: Electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of CoVMnSb: ab initio study.
Wednesday, September 13, 2023 - 4:00 pm
Dr. Pavel Lukashev, Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Northern Iowa will be presenting his findings on electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of CoVMnSb: ab initio study. The generation of highly spin-polarized current is one of the key aspects investigated for potentialdevice applications in spin-based electronics (spintronics). In principle, the ideal material for such applications is a room temperature half-metal, i.e. a material that is conducting electrons of one spin only. He will present computational results on electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of CoVMnSb, a quaternary Heusler alloy. He will show that this material may crystallize in two energetically closestructural phases: inverted and regular cubic. The inverted cubic phase is the ground state, with ferrimagnetic alignment, and around 80% spin polarization. At the same time, the regular cubic phase isferromagnetic half-metal. The difference in the magnetic states of these two phases is explained by thedifference in calculated exchange coupling parameters between vanadium atom and its neighbors. Transition to regular cubic phase may be attained by applying uniform pressure. In practice, this pressuremay be realized by atomic substitution of non-magnetic atom (Sb) with another non-magnetic atom (Si)of smaller radius. More specifically, 25% substitution of Sb with Si results in half-metallic transition. Inaddition, CoVMnSb 0.5 Si 0.5 retains its half-metallic properties under a considerable range of mechanicalpressure, as well as exhibits thermodynamic stability, thus making this alloy attractive for potentialspintronic applications.

The Challenges of Teaching for Democracy in Polarized TimesThe Challenges of Teaching for Democracy in Polarized Times
Monday, September 18, 2023 - 5:00 pm
For Consitutition Day 2023, UNI presents, "The Challenges of Teaching for Democracy in Polarized Times," a lecture by Diana Hess, Dean of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education.
Dean Hess is the Principal Investigator for The Discussion Project at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER). As Dean of the UW-Madison School of Education and faculty member in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Hess is deeply committed to working with teachers to improve the quality of democratic education in schools.
Since 1997, Dean Hess has been researching how teachers engage their students in discussions of highly controversial political and constitutional issues, and what impact this approach to civic education has on what young people learn. Her first book on this topic, “Controversy in the Classroom: The Democratic Power of Discussion,” won the National Council for the Social Studies Exemplary Research Award in 2009. Her most recent book, “The Political Classroom: Evidence and Ethics in Democratic Education,” co-authored with Paula McAvoy, won the American Educational Research Association’s Outstanding Book Award in 2016 and the prestigious Grawemeyer Award in 2017. Also in 2017, Dean Hess was recognized by the National Council on Social Studies with the Grambs Distinguished Career Award for Research.
The lecture is funded by the National Endowment for Humanities Connections Planning Grant, “Humanities For Civic Education: Preparing Teachers And Students For Engaged Citizenship,” and is sponsored by the College of Education, the UNI Chapter of the American Democracy Project, and the Center For Excellence in Teaching & Learning.

Her solo exhibition titled “Immigrant Luchadores” will appear in the Gallery Showcases in the Kamerick Art Building (KAB) from September 15-October 13, 2023 during Latiné Heritage Month. Ms. Alarcón Avila will also present a public lecture in Spanish and English on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, in KAB Room 111 at 7 p.m. related to her photography with immigrant communities in Iowa and her recently published essay in the anthology Somewhere We Are Humans: Authentic Voices on Migration, Survival, and New Beginnings / Donde somos humanos: Historias genuinas sobre migración, sobrevivencia y renaceres (Harper Collins, 2023).

Kappa Sigma Fraternity Block PartyKappa Sigma Fraternity Block Party
Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm
The Kappa Sigma Military Heroes Campaign is committed to supporting ongoing care for our military veterans and their families. We aggressively pursue opportunities to assist our nation’s veterans with financial and organizational support to help them overcome the battles they fight every day. The Military Heroes Campaign is rooted in the idea that every veteran deserves a stable life and an active community of supporters.
Every year our local Mu-Upsilon, chapter of Kappa Sigma, at the University of Northern Iowa, has put on our annual Fall Block Party. This philanthropic event is hosted at the Kappa Sigma house every year and consists of live entertainment, food, yard games, silent auctions, door prizes, sweetheart announcement/thank you and this year we have confirmed with the National Guard a military vehicle to be on display as well as their rock climbing wall. We also have many local nonprofits that support our veterans here in the Cedar Valley that will be in attendance.
With that being said we are excited to also share that we will be donating 80% of our funds raised to our national foundation the Military Heroes Campaign and the other 20% to local nonprofit veteran support organization, Americans for Independent Living, based here in the Cedar Valley, in Waterloo, IA. Our goal is to grow this event larger year after year to ensure we are raising as much as we can for our nation's veterans. Feel free to visit either of these two links below to learn more about our beneficiaries.

Gail Lehr & Bell Bottom BluesGail Lehr & Bell Bottom Blues
Monday, September 25, 2023 - 3:30 pm
Gail Lehr worked for many years as the Office Manager in the Department of Languages & Literatures and in the Department of English. But prior to starting her career, she had been a girl growing up in Janesville in the 1970s during a tumultuous era when youth culture had disrupted conventions and redefined what growing up meant. It was an exciting and confusing time, and Lehr captures it by documenting her 14th summer, a time when she was still a girl but experiencing all the complexities of adult life.

Dr. Andrew Christianson from Oak Ridge National Laboratory will present on probing collective quantum effects of interacting spins on the honeycomb lattice. In quantum magnetism, elegantly simple model systems exhibit rich behavior that enables the testing of fundamental ideas which in turn serve as the basis for understanding and identifying more complex behavior. This talk will focus on the physics of the honeycomb lattice Heisenberg model as probed experimentally by neutron scattering methods. The honeycomb lattice Heisenberg model is uncomplicated: only nearest neighbor Heisenberg interactions are considered; there is no frustration, and the ground state at T=0 is the Néel state. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal that the low energy magnetic excitation spectrum consists of conventional spin waves and an unusually sharp feature within a broad continuum. The broad continuum corresponds to a two-magnon contribution while the sharp feature within this continuum is identified as a Van Hove singularity in the joint density of states. We discuss how quantum effects renormalize the single-magnon and multimagnon excitations and how this renormalization can be tuned and ultimately driven to the classical limit by applying a magnetic field. From a more general perspective, this work demonstrates that structures within magnetic continua can occur over a wide experimental parameter space and can be used as a reliable means of identifying quantum phenomena.
