Danish History and Culture: Connecting with the Past So We Can Flourish in the FutureDanish History and Culture: Connecting with the Past So We Can Flourish in the Future
Thursday, October 12, 2023 - 4:00 pm
Denmark has a rich and vibrant history and culture. In the 1890s and the early 20th Century, more Danes immigrated to Iowa than to any other state. A large contingent is located in Cedar Falls. Unfortunately, many fourth- and fifth-generation descendants of Danish immigrants have a weak connection to the land of their ancestors. This talk will explore ways that Iowans can connect with Danish history and culture for the benefit of both.
Presenter Bio: Frans Ørsted Andersen, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Education, Aarhus University. For nearly 20 years, his research focused on child play, creativity, and learning while employed in Research and Development by LEGO. He completed part of his PhD at Claremont Graduate University in Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Quality of Life Research Center. He has been a highly productive flow researcher, publishing studies in both Danish and English. His research in education focuses on special initiatives for marginalized youth, including comparative studies of US P-tech schools and similar initiatives in Denmark. He contributed to developing a graduate program in applied positive psychology at Aarhus University, and since 2022 has been active in Aarhus University's cross-curricular project (history, philosophy, psychology, and education), studying Danish emigration to the US from 1850-1920, particularly the flamboyant Danish-America, Chris Madsen (1851-1944).

Guest Recital: Jenny Klukken, percussionGuest Recital: Jenny Klukken, percussion
Tuesday, October 17, 2023 - 8:00 pm
Visiting artist Jenny Klukken will offer a percussion recital. Klukken is a classically-trained marimbist who crosses over into jazz and world music. She approaches the marimba with as much versatility as a guitarist or pianist. Jenny composes and performs on the marimba, combining her classical percussion background with her passion for folk, jazz, and world music. In her unique approach, she bridges the gap between virtuosic marimba repertoire and improvised music-making. A recipient of various artistic development grants, Jenny has travelled the world to develop her voice on the marimba. As a composer, she embraces complex rhythms, improvisation, audience approachability, and the high technical skills the instrument demands. This event is free and open to the public.

Professor Kenneth Atkinson of UNI's Department of History will discuss his international work as a Bible translator. In this presentation, he will show how scholars reconstruct and interpret the oldest biblical manuscripts and render them into English. Professor Atkinson promises not to bore you with detailed linguistic examinations of biblical Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.
