Panel w/ Q&A: Freedom of Speech Meets Academic Responsibility
It can be unsettling to see our workplaces in the headlines each week. In some ways we are in uncharted territory, but this panel of seasoned guides will help us by placing the practice of academic freedom in its institutional contexts.
Understanding these contexts is important because faculty can best serve their students, protect themselves, and make it easier for institutional representatives to help them negotiate challenges, when they consider relevant frameworks of policy and process. Our guests will also explore what institutional representatives need from faculty in order to advocate for them if they are alleged to have abused their academic freedom. We will review pertinent resources and lay out existing remedial processes, from grievance to resolution. We will seek to clarify what shared understandings and distinct considerations underpin the work of United Faculty, Academic Affairs, and the Office of the General Counsel.
There will be ample time for your questions, too.
