A Small Pair of Feet in the Middle of the Sea A Small Pair of Feet in the Middle of the Sea
Wednesday, September 29, 2021 - 7:00 pm to Sunday, October 3, 2021 - 2:00 pm
TheatreUNI’s first production for the 2021-2022 season is A Small Pair of Feet in the Middle of the Sea by Kit Steinkeller. This “whimsical drama” is a radical retelling of the Greek myth of Icarus, the boy who flew too close to the sun. At times silly and at times somber, A Small Pair of Feet... is a lyrical look at what it means to find love in remarkable circumstances and an examination of who deserves second chances. Outdoor performances only for the safety of our audiences!
Outdoor seating options: Chairs on risers: $15; Seated on steps (cushions available) $10; Be a groundling - bring a blanket! $6

"A Small Pair of Feet in the Middle of the Sea”"A Small Pair of Feet in the Middle of the Sea”
Sunday, October 3, 2021 - 2:00 pm
TheatreUNI will present “A Small Pair of Feet in the Middle of the Sea” by Kit Steinkeller at 7 p.m., Sept. 29 - Oct. 2 and on Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. in the Arts Triangle Courtyard on the University of Northern Iowa campus.
“A Small Pair of Feet in the Middle of the Sea” is a “deconstruction” of the Greek myth of Icarus, the boy who flew too close to the sun, written by Kit Steinkeller (the creator of the television series “Sorry for Your Loss”). Described by the author as a “whimsical drama,” the play, at times deeply silly and at times very sad, asks questions about the essential nature of truth, the lies we tell ourselves and the enduring power of story and myth.
“A Small Pair of Feet” is the first offering of TheatreUNI’s 2021-2022 season and the first live theatre production since the start of the pandemic. The production is directed by Matthew James Weedman, associate professor of performance. Scenic design is by Mark Parrott, associate professor of design, and costume design is by Megan Gilchrist, a senior design and production student. Lighting design is by Ron Koinzen and the production stage manager is Olivia McQuerry. This play will be produced outdoors.
Tickets are $15 for chairs, $10 for stair seats (cushions available), $6 for ground seats (bring your own blanket) and free for UNI students with their student ID. Tickets can be purchased from the UNITix website and at the UNItix counter in the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.

Remembering Tunis SpeedwayRemembering Tunis Speedway
Wednesday, October 6, 2021 - 7:00 pm
Tunis Speedway was a well-known Iowa dirt track racing venue in Waterloo, located near what is now the McDonald’s on University Avenue. In its heyday from the 1950s to the 1980s, Tunis Speedway brought up to 5,000 people out on Sundays to watch drivers duke it out on the ¼ mile dirt oval.
Did you see the racing at Tunis Speedway? Were you one of the hundreds of drivers who tried their talents and courage on those dusty, noisy summer nights? Come to Overman Park to view a free short documentary featuring local historian Jim Volgarino and a collection of photographs visualizing Tunis Speedway and its 35 year history. The 17-minute documentary,Chasing the Checker Flag: Tunis Speedway|Waterloo, Iowa,is part of a series of historical presentations produced by Fortepan Iowa (fortepan.us), an Iowa photo archiving project of the University of Northern Iowa.
Then stick around to reminisce about Iowa race car culture. What was this culture about, and what stories can you share? Do you have pictures of those times? Come along for the ride and enjoy the memories.
Bring a chair or blanket. If it rains, the event will move to the Cedar Falls Public Library.
This event is sponsored by the Cedar Falls Public Library in partnership with Fortepan Iowa, a public photo archive of Iowa family snapshots based at the University of Northern Iowa.
