Out of the Darkness WalkOut of the Darkness Walk
Saturday, April 1, 2023 - 10:00 am
Out of the Darkness is an on-campus student organization which raises awareness and funds for suicide prevention through the American Foundation for Suicide Awareness. The purpose of this signature event is to engage young adults in AFSP's mission and programs, raise funds for youth suicide prevention and programs, create a brand identity for AFSP fundraising, maximize fundraising success and laying the ground work for AFSP's educational programming and chapters in the future. At the end of the fundraising year OOTD hold a campus walk where efforts will be celebrated and participants will walk in solidarity for those lost to suicide and/or struggling with mental health. Campus walks will dramatically increase the number of young people involved in AFSP and the amount of funds available for suicide prevention research and education; both are needed to save lives. Why Walk? To change the culture. To save lives. To revent suicide. We all have a reason to walk, and each reason connects us.

2023 Begeman Lecture: Searching for Other Worlds: The James Webb Space Telescope & Beyond2023 Begeman Lecture: Searching for Other Worlds: The James Webb Space Telescope & Beyond
Wednesday, March 29, 2023 - 7:00 pm
Dr. Christopher Stark
Deputy Observatory Project Scientist, James Webb Space Telescope
The last few decades have seen an explosive growth in the number of planets detected around other stars (exoplanets). We have now discovered a multitude of exoplanets entirely unlike anything in our solar system. Yet detecting planets similar to our own around Sun-like stars has, so far, remained out of reach. With the recent successful launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), NASA has new eyes on the universe and a new tool to study exoplanets. In this talk I will review the state of the field in exoplanets and introduce the many different methods for detecting exoplanets and their limitations. I will highlight the launch and commissioning of JWST and explain how the telescope will be used to observe and characterize exoplanets. I will conclude by discussing NASA's upcoming missions and future plans to search for potentially habitable worlds like our own.
