The Historical Importance of the First Earth Day Teach-In

The Historical Importance of the First Earth Day Teach-In

Monday, April 22, 2024 - 4:00 pm

Today marks the fifty-fourth Earth Day at the University of Northern Iowa. The idea of Earth Day began when Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson called for a national teach-in on April 22, 1970. Millions of Americans responded creating, collectively, a demonstration that surpassed the largest Civil Rights and Vietnam protests. The first Earth Day was not even a single day as events spanned multiple days and weeks throughout the spring of 1970. As historian Adam Rome argues, the series of events that year created the first green generation and transformed the ways in which Americans viewed the environment.
To learn more about the historical importance of the first Earth Day and UNI's role, please join Professor Williams' interactive talk today at 4 p.m. in Seerley Room 220.
