Guest Recital: Geoffrey Keezer, piano & Gillian Margot, voiceGuest Recital: Geoffrey Keezer, piano & Gillian Margot, voice
Monday, March 4, 2024 - 7:30 pm
Visiting artists Geoffrey Keezer and Gillian Margot will offer a recital. Grammy-winning pianist Geoffrey Keezer is celebrated internationally for his highly regarded discography, unique compositions, and acclaimed performances in a variety of configurations. Keezer has been a major figure in NYC's jazz piano scene since 1989, when he became the last pianist with the legendary Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Gillian Margot is a singer with a rare gift that makes people sit up and listen. She possesses an exquisite voice, a disarmingly wide range and a style that eschews jazz singer clichés in favour of an original, interpretive delivery grounded in a song's lyrical and emotional content. Keezer and Margot have been touring, writing and recording together for several years, including their 2018 album "On My Way to You" (MarKeez). They bring their unique vision of the vocal and piano duet to the Midwest this March, performing familiar jazz standards, beloved pop songs and vibrant original compositions, in a varied and intimate set. Don't miss these two world-class artists in concert together! This event is free and open to the public.

One Vision of Queen Featuring Marc MartelOne Vision of Queen Featuring Marc Martel
Saturday, March 23, 2024 - 7:00 pm
We Will Rock You, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, We are the Champions and the legendary Bohemian Rhapsody, are songs that just scratch the surface of Queen’s legacy. There was only one Freddie Mercury. His unique vocals have made it near impossible to perform his music as he did. Finally, we are able to present Marc Martel and One Vision of Queen performing Freddie’s music as it should be. Legendary Queen drummer Roger Taylor remarked to the Daily Record: “That voice. You listen, close your eyes and you think it’s Freddie. It’s really uncanny.” You may have already heard Marc as he performed vocals on the Bohemian Rhapsody, the recent Queen/Freddie Mercury biopic.

Abortion Rights: The Road from Roe and Casey to DobbsAbortion Rights: The Road from Roe and Casey to Dobbs
Wednesday, March 27, 2024 - 4:00 pm
Francis Degnin, Associate Professor of Philosophy, is giving the March lecture of our Phi Alpha Theta lecture series. In honor of Women's History Month, he is presenting "Abortion Rights: The Road from Roe and Casey to Dobbs".
The Supreme Court's Dobbs decision radically changed the abortion landscape in the US. But it didn't change everything. For example, it didn't change the position, asserted in Roe, that the US Constitution is silent on the question of whether an unborn fetus is a person. It also didn't challenge the notion that a right to privacy is inherent (implied, but not named) in the Constitution.
What are the key points, and rationale, of the Dobbs decision? Of the dissent? This talk will focus on explicating those key points as well as providing a limited assessment of some of the strengths and weaknesses of the arguments on both sides of the decision.

Physics Colloquium: From Chemistry to Code: Field Notes from a Career-ChangerPhysics Colloquium: From Chemistry to Code: Field Notes from a Career-Changer
Wednesday, March 27, 2024 - 4:00 pm
Presentation by Melanie Butler, Data Modeler at Gridium, Inc.
When I graduated with my undergraduate degree in chemistry I had vague plans to pursue research with renewable energy applications, perhaps in an academic setting. Since then I have moved through several seasons of my career, from graduate research, to secondary education, to working with data in multiple sectors. In this talk I will share my personal experiences transitioning from a background in STEM to a career in data science. I will cover a potpourri of topics, including several real-life applications of data science in fundraising, health insurance, and building decarbonization industries. I hope to emphasize patterns of approach that apply across fields, and the ways in which a STEM background lends itself to working in data science.
